    dining table

  • a table at which meals are served; "he helped her clear the dining table"; "a feast was spread upon the board"

  • (Dining Tables) The first dining tables of which survivors remain are the type known as refectory tables. They are made usually of oak, and one of the earliest, at Penshurst Place in Kent, has a typical thick top of joined planks supported on three separate trestles.

french country dining table - The Basque

The Basque Table: Passionate Home Cooking from One of Europe's Great Regional Cuisines

The Basque Table: Passionate Home Cooking from One of Europe's Great Regional Cuisines

In Europe, the Basques are known for their creativity in the kitchen and their long-enduring culinary heritage. In the Spanish Basque country itself, food and eating are the center of everyday life and the focus of endless conversation. Basque women lovingly pass on their cooking techniques to daughters and granddaughters, and Basque men, who belong to traditional cooking clubs called txokos, themselves enjoy lingering over stove and table.

Few people have stayed in one place as long as the Basque people have stayed in Basque Country, which spreads from northern Spain across the Pyrenees into France and stretches out to the sea. Basque Country has remained intact from the time of cave paintings to today. The Basque language is a language unlike any other; even Basque DNA is different from any other European DNA. So it should come as no surprise that the food of Basque Country, while similar to what is found in other parts of Spain and France, is distinct as to its place and people of origin. Restaurant owner and chef Teresa Barrenechea invites one and all to come sit at the Basque table and learn while enjoying.
Though nueva cocina has invaded Basque cooking, Barrenechea has intentionally left it aside for another book. She cleaves to tradition in The Basque Table, to the pinchos (like tapas), first courses, and main courses that make up the traditional meal served in Basque homes. It is a deceptively simple cuisine, something of a tightrope act, that demands of any cook the ability to select the best possible ingredients. When, in a dish like Chuletitas de Cordero (grilled lamb chops), you are only working with the chops, olive oil, garlic, flat-leaf parsley, and salt, there's no place to hide. And yet, when everything is exemplary and the chops come off the grill at the perfect moment, the effect in the mouth and in the heart and soul of any diner will defy description. A tough kind of simple, in other words.
A fierce pride shows in Barrenechea's recipe descriptions and food notes. She holds herself to the highest cultural standard. What she aims for and achieves is a replication in print, with an American kitchen in mind, of exactly how a certain dish should taste to the Basque palate.
So take heart in dishes like sweetbreads with garlic and parsley, crayfish in hot sauce, mushrooms with scrambled eggs, white bean stew, roasted fresh ham, chicken Basque style, fresh cod with red and black sauces, grilled prawns, and trout Navarra-style. You may be cooking at home, but you'll be sitting and eating at a Basque table. And there's no other table quite like it. --Schuyler Ingle

A Day At The Lake

A Day At The Lake

This is the day we almost died.

On the back of the photo all you'll see is "7/76."

No mention that about an hour before this my brother and I could've drowned on a man-made lake.

Jeff just turned 14 the month before. I was a few weeks past 21. Maybe it was a few days after the Fourth of July. Or before. Seriously, I don't remember. But I won't forget what happened that day.

For the middle of summer, it was a shit day. Drizzly, about 60 degrees. Gun metal gray skies. Still, there was a family picnic to go to. And my uncle wanted to show off his new sailboat.

My mother bitched. My dad said we had to go. It was his family. You know how that works.

So there we were. In the parking at the lake. There's my uncle. And we're all looking for his sailboat. I mean someone says sailboat to me and I see President Kennedy skimming across the white tops off Hyannis Port.

Yeah, well, there's no Jack or Jackie in sight. Instead my uncle's carrying around a piece of plastic about six feet high and two and a half wide. That's the boat. The sail's basically a triangle of plastic on a patio table umbrella pole. No America's Cup here.

So no one really wants to go sailing with him. Seriously, it's about 55 degrees at the lake. Wind's blowing hard enough to make the spit of a rain feel like someone's driving finishing nails into your skin.

My uncle's up to his ankles in the water when my brother says he'll go. My mother asks about life preservers. My uncle and dad roll their eyes and say stop worrying.

They push off and I watch my mom and dad and aunt set up the picnic tables. My younger cousins and my other brother start playing in the sand, because they're little kids. And I'm wishing I was home figuring out how to play some Jackson Browne songs on my guitar and getting high. I mean, Christ, I'm 21. What the hell am I doing here?

No one really noticed at first. Until the sky turned a dark black green. Except for one hole in the center that almost radiated a crystal blue light. That's when I saw them. My brother and uncle. Treading water about a hundred feet off shore. Beside the slab of plastic with its sail barely floating on the surface.

The adults by now surrendered on the picnic idea, hustling the little kids and food into the cars. I point out my uncle and brother to my dad. By now it's nearly black as night.

They're not going to make it in, I shout. We gotta do something.

My dad can't swim. Doesn't like boats. They'll be fine he says. But I can tell by the way my uncle is waving his arms that he doesn't agree.

Let's put the picnic stuff in the cars, my dad says.

But I just watch them in the lake. By now, all the other boats are in. Except for one guy in what was the world's smallest motor boat. Just as he pulls into the dock, I jump on board and tell him we got to get the two guys stuck out there.

The guy's wearing old style rimmed glasses. Has a mustache. Looks a little like Mr. Whipple from the Charmin commercials. He turns his head a bit and sees them. I hear his wife scream Oh my God. They're going to drown. And off we go.

Almost as soon as we reach them, the sky goes totally dark. We can't see three feet in any direction. I haul my brother into the boat and the guy tells us to be careful to not all sit on one side. My uncle stays in the water, afraid he'll tip the boat if he tries to get in. He's a big guy.

The guy driving the boat asks if I remember which direction the shore is. I point it out. And he goes the opposite way. The waves will turn us over if we go that way, he yells.

I look at my brother. He's nearly white and I can hear his teeth banging together. Are you scared, I ask. No, he tells me. Just cold.

Somehow my uncle manages to keep a grip on the boat as we bounce over the tops of waves about three feet high. The guy's wife starts praying. And I'd wish she'd stop because the only person she asking Him to save is my brother. I figure I'm a little too young to die, too.

On we bounced. With no idea where we were headed. Or when the storm might stop. And then we bump into another shore. Mostly a hillside. We jump out and pull the boat up the slope as much as we can. I mean, we'll need a ride back.

Maybe for 10 minutes we sit there. The rain slamming us. And no one really says much except You okay?

Then it stops. The wind. The rain. And a haze of light sifts through the clouds. We all jump back into the boat. During the storm we drifted about 20 minutes from the dock. As we glide back, no one says a word. I stick my hand in the smooth, still water that barely ripples as we cut through it.

From the boat i spot my parents and aunt. They're all sobbing. Even from that far away I could tell. Closer to the shore, I jump out. Splash toward them. Fall on my knees and kiss the ground. Because I'm an ass like that. They don't laugh.

After the hugging and I thought you were all dead cries of joy, I ask my dad one question.

Why didn't you do something?

Dresser and changing table top, done!

Dresser and changing table top, done!

Everything is painted with Benjamin Moore's Aura paint in a satin finish; the dresser drawer pulls are glass, and we found them online for less than the similar plastic ones you can buy at most home stores.

Oh, and your eyes don't deceive; the changing table top is pushed just off-center to the left, so it overhangs the radiator a bit more than the diaper trash container. This weekend, I'll build a quick radiator top cover that'll extend back into the windowsill just behind that radiator, giving us a nice surface for stuff like wipes and diapers.

It took some time, but our bedside table glass is finally in place. We used clear, tempered Starphire brand glass with a flat polished edge at 3/16" thick.

For best fit when ordering glass tops, order them 1/8" less in size than the piece that you are covering so that you don't have an overhang, i.e.-- our little bedside table tops are 15-7/8 x 15-7/8" while their glass tops are 15-3/4 x 15-3/4". The glass top edges round out a bit.

Fields (in my memory and mind)

Fields (in my memory and mind)

there was a time i remember
in the fields in my memory
remembering when i was a little farm boy 'round 1959 or '60.
it was just me
watching "today" with dave garroway
and captain kangaroo featuring tom terrific cartoons
and bill cullen joking around
and playing with his wind-up toys on "the price is right"
and ruth lyons on the 50-50 club
and my mom meanwhile is in the kitchen
making her cookies and cakes
and later watching "her shows"
in the noontime hour.

(she never cared for ruth lyons anyway.)

i would then play by myself outside at the barnyard
until my sisters got off the school bus
and dad came home from work.
we would talk at the dinner table
about how our day went while we ate
after mom said grace.

mom and dad milked the cows
my sisters and i gave sandy the collie
a bubble bath in a galvanized washtub
then jumping out and shaking herself dry
and i laughed and giggled as i got wet
making me think our dog was doing the hula
while hawaiian war chant by tommy dorsey
(or spike jones or somebody)
played constantly
on the record player in my mind.

we had no money to go to disneyland
except for patronizing a run-down amusement park
up at indian lake that has seen better days.
still we made the best of it with what we had.
we had the blue skies,sunshine
and the breeze and the shade trees on hot humid days
in the backyard of our house
watchin' the red sunset at 9pm
and me and my sisters
catching and collecting lightning bugs in mason jars
on those nights we didn't go to the drive-in.

sometimes dad would take us mushroom hunting
in the woods across the road on a sunday afternoon
as mom hated football
and preferred old 1940s movies
frequently over-inundated and over-interrupted
by home improvement and live remote car dealer ads
on the old airline black and white set instead.

we found no mushrooms
which i thought was boring at first
not realizing at the time
that God was enveloping us in His love
and the peaceful solitude of birds in the trees singing
and the sound of leaves crunching underfoot.
within the reverberated outdoor cathedral of the woods.

i'm fifty-four now
i live in town now
and my better half is not a happy camper again
saying that she did not hear me and my oldest son
trying to wake her up to go to work
as she once again makes me feel "this small"
in her profanity-laced brand of sister joseph-ellen type verbal abuse and sarcasm.

she and my other son head off to work
i sit on the front porch with RM 88.7 FM on
as the neighbors across the street
with their toddlers clad only in their diapers playin' on the sidewalk
and their usual reckneck way of fussin, arguin' and carryin' on.

(and my significant other thinks I'M a"hilljack" for craps sake!)

its been a hot day at work
too hot and tired to cook
(couldn't find the duo-tang full of recipes anyway)
a quick trip to the wal-mart subway only serves to fuel her hissy-fit at me.

i'm on the front porch
as the RM folks pray the on-air rosary
before 7;30
i pray:
"Jesus and Mary...please take me home...
..spare me fron the dreaded time of trial..."

as i head off to the fields of my mind
where there is still some sort of peace and serenity.

Behind the main building at Enggården is this amazing fountain / patio / diorama they call the "Couch of Life".

Behind the main building at Enggården is this amazing fountain / patio / diorama they call the "Couch of Life".

The Couch of Life
The source to understand a little bit of life!
This work of art should be read from right to left.

The first step -
Looks like a question mark. It consists of dishes and a basin and are symbols of the different stages and developmental steps of life. The steps are not equal, because they should be unique in their own simplicity and expression. The steps are thus an image of the originality and peculiarity of life. - The fountain is also a symbol of the Fountain model.

The first arch at the right -
The half round yellow form shows itself like a sunrise - a birth - motion of life in life - a repetition - the wheel of life.

The second arch -
Represents living space or heart space. That is the important breathing space, meditation or stillness.

The pointed arches and the triangle -
symbolizes the Holy Spirit, which spans all stages of life.
A big stone at the point of the largest triangle is an expression of relating to common sense. It gives grounding to life. The table is intended for an outdoor kitchen.

The third arch -
consists of unharmonic growths, ,that shows that life is full of possibilities and choices - but the choices are not always beneficial.

The fourth arch (The harmony of the All) -
Is without decor and formed completely round. The arches show the perfect calm, retiredness of anonymity, simplicity and rest.

The happy face -
Shows the joyful throughout life. All the good in our existence, that overshadows all badness.

The twisted chimney -
shows something about the obstacles in life, that can be necessary for us to go through and thereby get a richer life.
The 12 steps corresonds to the 12 disciples.

The big stone -
shall draw your thoughts to the timelessness in eternity - with his limitations.

The last part of the Couch of Life -
Forms half a question mark, which refers to the questions and riddles of this one life, we solve and gain insight.

The Couch of Life has got a floor. It is granite from Bornholm. A path has been made from the Couch of Life to the existing building. I have had help from Peter, Jorgen and Martin. the Couch of Live has gained a new expression.

The floor is a symbol on the foundation in life, being the rooting in the real reality - the steady core.
From emptiness, nothingness and the barren land the path we have created is a picture of the broken isolation and the connection back to life. The whole is a combination of maintaining, unchangeability, the sincerity and recognition of oneself in faith, hope and love.
